I want to read a story about a wizard whose only spell is “fix this”, but the specially-crafted magic takes their intent into account. "Fix this" can mean repairing the wheel on the adventurers’ cart or healing a broken arm or “fixing” a lock so that it’s in what the wizard considers the “correct” (unlocked) position. Imagine the other mages getting increasingly frustrated as the wizard stubbornly refuses to learn any other spells.
Wizard: *points at a canyon* Fix this
Other casters: That’s not really how spells -
Wizard: Oh look, one of our blankets is now a magic carpet. Guess we don’t need a bridge.
Casters: How -
Wizard: *points at logs that won’t catch fire* Fix this
Other casters: There’s been too much rain, it won’t -
Wizard: I fixed it so that it’s in the same state it was yesterday. Someone here knows how to start a fire, right?
Casters: What -
Wizard: *points at charging dragon*: Fix this
Other casters: THAT’S NOT HOW MAGIC WORKS YOU IDIOT WE’RE GOING TO DIE
Dragon: *coughs* Did you just… cure my intestinal problems? I’ve been trying to stop breathing fire for weeks, but it just kept spilling out, and every time I tried to ask for help, I burned everything down. I won’t forget this kindness.
A holiday themed story concept/ faux anime screenshot for fun! hehe It’s about twin bros trained to be future Santa and Krampus. But, one day, the one trained to become Santa ran away from his duty, destroying the balance.. Happy Holidays everyone!!
you know what the craziest thing about rey and kylo’s thing in TLJ is? rey is the exact opposite of open and trusting. she was raised on a desolate, dog-eat-dog planet where she had to work for her food since a young age, and you want me to believe that all the sudden she’s emotionally vulnerable and wilting? what??? mind, this movie took place 48 hours after TFA, so don’t pull that “””character development””” bullshit. she doesn’t trust people at all. her friendship with finn took a while to cultivate, and he wasn’t even doing anything hostile to her. what in all of fuck made rian johnson think she would be able to sympathise with someone who has been actively trying to kill her for the near entirety of their interactions????????????????
^^^^^^^ I mean……… somebody had to be brave enough to say it
It really doesn’t make any sense. RJ was asking us to believe that the best arc for a character who lived in a brutal environment, who could rely on and trust only herself was to learn how to believe in herself, not be so trusting and not look to others to save the day. It makes zero sense.
I honestly think that RJ couldn’t look beyond the age, gender and race of the characters and the stereotypes and stereotypical arcs that are often assigned to their demographics, completely ignoring whether it actually made sense for the character and their background. For Rey, this meant her being conned by a “bad boy” (ignoring the fact that Kylo goes waaaay beyond just being a bad boy), then learning that he’s really full of shit and finding her own strength and independence. Again, this is a stereotypical arc that doesn’t fit Rey at all, but one RJ refused to look past.
That’s a really good point and helpful way of putting it. Does the same hold true for the other characters? This may help explain Finn’s and Poe’s mischaracterization too.
Yeah I think it does apply to them as well as Leia and Luke (especially Luke with the cranky, jaded old man who learns to accept the new generation and give hope to them before dying).
RJ clearly bought into the racist, sexist and ageist stereotypes and what’s worse is that not only does he aggressively refuse to critically evaluate his own biases and understand how utilizing these stereotypes in his work is harmful, he thinks that doing so is brilliant and somehow “subversive”.
You two just did a galaxy brain evolution in real time.
mermaids would have to be dark-skinned and chubby to survive in the ocean
water isnt a great means of protecting oneself from the sun theyd have to be very dark if they were shallow mermaids and they didnt want to be constantly sunburnt and they may be paler if they lived deeper in the water but theyd have to be buff and/or chubby as hell to resist the water pressure and cold of the deep sea
what im saying is pale-ass white skinny mermaids are just unrealistic
I love this tea
Fat isn’t a defense against water pressure, it’s an insulator. So the colder the water, the fatter the mermaid.
Scandinavian merfolk would be tubby, evolving more for persistence hunting in the freezing coastal waters, possibly relying more on siren-song to lull prey into effective range. The less moving the better! Gotta keep the chub on to survive the winter.
Whereas Mediterranean/Polynesian merfolk would spend their time among the fertile reefs in warmer waters, competing with other predators. They would be built for speed and agility, buff like sprinters. Darker skin would be harder to spot under the surf, and more resistant to the glaring sun.
Also: it’s not hair, it’s scillia that they use to filter plankton out of the water, and it stings like a jellyfish if you touch it.
I would imagine that merfolk come in many different colors, maybe they even have the ability to shift their skin tone to assist in hunting? I guess that depends on how intelligent your mermaids are.
Tldr; cold water mermaids would probably be chubby, warm water mermaids would look like Serna Williams.
Another thing to take into account is Deep-Sea-Gigantism. It’s not fully understood why many animal species such as the colossal squid and whales typically grow to unimaginable sizes in high-water-pressure areas, but it’s assumed that it develops as some sort of defense mechanism. This would imply that deep-sea merfolk would be a sort of Leviathan-class eldritch horror.
